Dutch gain academic honors

PELLA—The Central College women’s track and field squad has received academic recognition from the U.S. Track and Field/Cross Country Coaches Association.    

The Dutch were named a USTFCCCA Division III All-Academic team. Meanwhile, Central’s Jill Ziskovsky (sophomore, Dallas Center, Dallas Center-Grimes HS), Emily Teas (sophomore, Indianola), Rachelle Tipton (junior, Newton) and Rachel Boeke (senior, Cedar Rapids, Jefferson HS) were named to the USTFCCCA Division III All-Academic Track and Field team.

Central’s women’s squad compiled a 3.13 combined team grade point average for 2008-09. To be nominated a team must carry a GPA of 3.10 or higher.

To be eligible for the individual academic squad, a student-athlete must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.30 and have met an NCAA Division III indoor or outdoor provisional national meet qualifying standard.

Ziskovsky was cited for the second straight year. She carries a 3.95 GPA while majoring in communication and Spanish. Central’s Most Valuable Performer Award winner, Ziskovsky placed 15th in the heptathlon at the NCAA Division III meet and was a provisional qualifier in the 4x400-meter relay.

Teas was honored for the second time. She has a 3.70 GPA with an elementary education major. A provisional qualifier in the 4x400-meter relay, Teas received the Dutch Spirit Award.

Tipton was also honored for the second time. She has a 3.84 GPA while majoring in elementary education. She was a provisional qualifier in the 4x400-meter relay.

Boeke was recognized for the third straight year. She graduated with a 3.59 GPA while majoring in exercise science-athletic training. The team’s Most Valuable Field Events Performer, Boeke earned all-America distinction by finishing sixth in the shot put and eighth in the discus at the NCAA Division III meet.

All four student-athletes were earlier named to the academic all-Iowa Conference team.

Central has had 45 student-athletes on the USTFCCCA all-academic men’s and women’s squads since 1994.
