Central lands two on preseason state squad

PELLA—Central College’s Kurtis Brondyke (junior, Clinton) and Shane Wong (sophomore, Des Moines, Southeast Polk HS) have been named to the preseason all-Iowa small college football squad by the Oelwein Daily Register.

The team was chosen from returning players for all Iowa colleges and universities except Iowa, Iowa State and Northern Iowa. The complete Register team can be accessed at www.oelweindailyregister.com.

Brondyke (6-foot-4, 195 pounds) was a first-team selection as a punter. Also a wide receiver, Brondyke is a two-time first-team all-Iowa Conference honoree as a punter and was tabbed for the D3football.com all-West Region second team in 2007. He received Central’s Brian O’Donnell Award as the squad’s outstanding freshman in 2007. Brondyke averaged 40.6 yards on 57 punts last season, with 17 punts inside the opponent’s 20-yard line.

Brondyke is also a two-time all-America honoree in track and field, earning the distinction in the long jump in 2008 and the decathlon last spring

Wong (6-1, 235) was a second-team pick as a defensive lineman, although he played Central’s defensive stinger position last year. He recorded 64 tackles, including 13 for loss and tied for 11th in the NCAA Division III in sacks with 10, which led the Iowa Conference. Wong received Central’s Lankelma-Menning Award as the team’s outstanding underclassman.

Central opens the 2009 campaign Sept. 5 against Lakeland College in Sheboygan, Wis.
