Central stages track/cross country camp
PELLA—Central College will conduct a boys’ and girls’ track and field/cross country camp July 15-18 for athletes entering grades 9-12 next fall.
Instruction will be offered each day in sprints/hurdles, jumps, throws and cross country/distance events. Athletes can focus on one event group or choose a different group each day. The $200 camp fee includes air-conditioned lodging and meals. Commuters may attend for day or multiple days for $50 per day.
Athletes will receive training tips and technique instruction, a video analysis and instructional handouts for each event.
The camp is directed by Guy Mosher, associate head men’s and women’s track and field coach at Central. Mosher, entering his 20th year, is a multi-events specialist who has served as coach for two decathlon finalists at the U.S. Olympic trials. He has coached athletes who have received all-America honors 192 times in 13 events, with 15 national championships.
Central head track and field/cross country coach Joe Dunham is also on the camp staff. Dunham was named the Iowa Conference men’s track and field coach of the year after guiding the Dutch to their 12th league title in his first season at Central.
Other camp staff members include associate head cross country coach/track and field assistant Stephen Fyfe and track and field assistants Eric Pingel and Bryan George.
The camp will be conducted at Central’s A.N. Kuyper Athletics Complex. The complex includes a new 400-meter BSS 1000 polyurethane track at Ron and Joyce Schipper Stadium, with cages and rings for the weight events adjacent. There’s also an 8,000-meter cross country course, constructed in 2004, which features a variety of terrain and is an ideal training area for daily runs and race-specific workouts. The Ron Schipper Fitness Center houses a 7,200-square foot strength and conditioning area and is one of the largest collegiate training facilities in Iowa.
