Central 10th in final poll

PELLA—Central College is 10th in the final National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division III softball poll.

The Dutch, who were unranked prior to the season, are among four schools from the powerful Iowa Conference to crack the field. NCAA Division III runner-up Coe College (41-13) is second with Luther College (35-10) 19th and Wartburg College (37-8) 23rd.

Conference champion Central closed at 36-8, the 20th time the Dutch have topped the 30-win mark. They claimed their 10th league softball crown and made their 21st NCAA Division III tournament appearance. Coach George Wares finished his 25th season at Central with an 840-280-3 (.749) career record. He ranks third in the NCAA Division III in all-time career victories and is first in NCAA tourney berths (21) and tournament victories (79).

The Dutch will return starters at seven positions next season. Among the veterans are all-conference honorees Rachael Everingham (freshman, Georgetown, Ill., Ridge Farm HS), a designated player, second baseman Angela Davis (freshman, West Des Moines, Valley HS) and pitcher Kiley Lythberg (sophomore, Mount Prospect, Ill.).
