May 15, 2009Two Dutch golfers on academic squad
PELLA—Central College’s Andy Petersen (senior, Davenport, West HS) and Andrew Townsend (junior, Bettendorf, Pleasant Valley HS) have been named to the Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholars team for Division III.
Both players are competing for Central this week at the NCAA Division III men’s golf tourney in Port St. Lucie, Fla.
Petersen, a two-time Iowa Conference MVP, is a physics major with a 3.29 grade point average. Townsend, also an academic all-Iowa Conference honoree, carries a 3.51 GPA with an accounting major.
To be eligible for the honor squad, a player must be a junor or senior, compete for at least two full seasons, participate in 70 percent of his team’s competitive rounds or in the NCAA championships, have a stroke average under 79.0 and maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher.
Central’s men’s golfers have received All-America Scholars recognition 36 times since 1984, the most of any Iowa school.
