May 13, 2009Ziskovksy strengthens bid for Division III meet
PELLA—Sophomore Jill Ziskovsky (Dallas Center, Dallas Center-Grimes HS) topped her previous NCAA Division III provisional qualifying heptathlon mark with a total of 4,389 points in stormy conditions at the Central Last Chance Open Tuesday and Wednesday.
Ziskovsky’s previous total of 4,351 points met the provisional qualifying standard in the event but her improved score vaults her to the 14th-best score in the nation this season and puts her in good position to compete at the Division III Championships. If she does get a bid to the national meet Central will have two heptathletes competing. Teammate Carissa Bentz’s (Ute, Boyer Valley HS) 4,419 points this season is currently 11th-best in the nation.
In a bid to improve his provisional mark in 400 meter hurdles junior Jordan Gegner (Martensdale, Martensdale-St. Marys) came up short of his previous best running 54.30 seconds and figures to need a better time to earn an invite to the NCAA Division III meet.
“Jordan (Gegner) had a great 400 meter hurdle race going,” said head coach Joe Dunham. “But on the sixth hurdle he stuttered just a little and that threw him off. If he gets through that clean next time, I think he’ll make it.”
Freshman Chris Henely (Grundy Center) reached the provisional mark for the first time in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 14.89 seconds, one-hundredth of a second under the qualifying time.
Dunham said that Henely will likely need to drop another two tenths of a second off his time to make the Division III championships.
Senior Rachel Boeke (Cedar Rapids, Thomas Jefferson HS) and freshman Tyler Crouse (Hedrick, Pekin HS) each threw qualifying distances in the discus throw but were unable to top their marks from earlier this season.
Central athletes will have two final chances to reach provisional qualifying marks Thursday and Friday at the North Central Last Chance Open in Naperville, Ill. and the Augustana Last Chance Open in Rock Island, Ill. The Division III Championship meet will be held May 21-23 in Marietta, Ohio.
