Central announces '09 schedule

PELLA—Central College will kick off its home football schedule Sept. 12 with a first-ever meeting with the Univ. of Wis.-Stevens Point.

Athletics director Al Dorenkamp announced the Dutch schedule Wednesday.

The Dutch open the 2009 campaign with a return game at Lakeland College in Sheboygan, Wis. Central blanked the Muskies 41-0 at Pella Sept. 6 and Lakeland went on to post a 5-5 mark.

Wis.-Stevens Point won a share of the title in the powerful Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletics Conference with a 6-1 mark. The Pointers were 9-2 overall, earning their first NCAA Division III playoff berth since 2001. Veteran coach John Miech has compiled a 129-70-2 record in 20 seasons. Central and Wis.-Stevens Point have just a one-year scheduling agreement.

Central’s Iowa Conference opener is Sept. 19 at the Univ. of Dubuque while the team’s off date in the league schedule rotation is Nov. 14, the final weekend of the regular season. Central’s homecoming game is Sept. 26 against Coe College.

Central returns 13 starters and 37 letterwinners from last season’s 6-4 club. Coach Jeff McMartin enters his sixth season at his alma mater with a glossy 43-12 record (.781). He’s a three-time conference coach of the year, leading the Dutch to three NCAA playoff berths while winning or sharing three league titles.
