Five Dutch earn all-league honors

PELLA—Five Central College players are on the all-Iowa Conference baseball squad. It’s a young group of Dutch honorees. Freshman second baseman Mike Furlong (Davenport, Assumption HS) and sophomore outfielder Caleb Rangel (Rock Island, Ill., Alleman HS) were first-team selections. Second-team picks include freshman pitcher Corey Eisenmann (Bloomingdale, Ill., Driscoll Catholic HS), sophomore outfielder Jarred Lackey (Somerton, Ariz., Cibola HS) and senior designated hitter Derek Knutson (Richland, Wash., Yorkville, Ill. HS).

Furlong hit a team-high .409 and set a school freshman-season record with 61 hits, the third-highest season total in school history. He had seven doubles, five triples, four homers and 49 RBIs.

Rangel, who received honorable mention a year ago, batted .390 with 12 doubles, one triple, two home runs and 40 RBIs while posting a .981 fielding percentage with seven assists. Rangel broke the school season walks record with 27, eclipsing the mark of 26 established by Shea Stamp in 2006.

Eisenmann was 4-2 with a 4.61 ERA in his freshman season. He yielded 68 hits and 23 walks in 54.2 innings, striking out 31.

Lackey hit .350, leading the team with 13 doubles, two triples, three home runs and a team-best 44 RBIs. He had a .957 fielding percentage with six assists.

Knutson, who received honorable mention in 2008, batted .362 with seven doubles, six home runs and 40 RBIs. He compiled a .957 fielding percentage.

Central’s young squad posted a 17-20 overall record with a 10-12 conference mark.
