May 7, 2009Central lands five on all-region teams
PELLA—Five Central College players have been named to the Louisville Slugger/National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-Midwest Region softball team.
Designated player Rachael Everingham (freshman, Georgetown, Ill., Ridge Farm HS) and pitcher Kiley Lythberg (sophomore, Mount Prospect, Ill.) were first-team selections, with Lythberg being chosen at large.
Pitcher Megan Swingen (senior, Woden, Woden-Crystal Lake-Titonka HS) and center fielder Alysha Overturf (senior, Bettendorf, Pleasant Valley HS) were each second-team picks while third baseman Afton Nelson (junior, Bettendorf, Pleasant Valley HS) was a third-team selection.
Overturf was a first-team all-region honoree as a freshman in 2006. The other four players are first-time selections. Those chosen for the first team are eligible for consideration for the NFCA All-America teams which will be announced next week.
Central’s honorees helped lead the Dutch to their 10th Iowa Conference championship and their 21st NCAA Division III tournament berth. Central, ranked No. 3 in the NFCA Division III poll, takes a 36-6 overall record into the first round of tourney play at Indianola Thursday. The Dutch take on Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.) at 6 p.m.
Everingham, also a first-team all-conference selection, is batting a team-high .376 with a double, two triples, two homers and 24 RBIs.
Lythberg, a second-team all-conference choice, has a 16-4 pitching mark and a 1.37 ERA. She’s allowed 101 hits and 21 walks in 133 innings while striking out 100.
Overturf, a two-time first-team all-conference pick, is hitting .374 with six doubles, three triples, two homers and 16 runs batted in while stealing 22 bases.
Swingen, who was earlier named the Iowa Conference pitcher of the year, posted a career-best 16-1 record with a 1.34 ERA, walking 19 batters and striking out 50 in 94 innings. Swingen ranks eighth on Central’s career strikeouts list (275), ninth in innings pitched (411.1), 10th in wins (48) and fifth in saves (9).
Nelson is hitting .357 with five doubles, three triples and 24 RBIs. She’s drawn a team-high 25 walks, six shy of the school season record, and has the squad’s highest on-base percentage at .483.
