Central gets NCAA berth

The Central College softball team will make a record 21st NCAA Division III championships appearance under coach George Wares, but faces a tough road. The Dutch are being sent to an eight-team first-round site in Indianola. 

The 59-team field was revealed Monday morning.

Iowa Conference champion Central (36-6) has the No. 2 seed and is scheduled to play the last of four games on Thursday, meeting Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletics Conference champion Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.). Start time has not been announced.

In other games, No. 1 seed Univ. of St. Thomas (Minn.) (39-4) faces No. 8 Webster Univ. (Mo.) (23-16), No. 5 Univ. of Wis.-La Crosse plays No. 4 Wartburg College (36-6), and No. 3 Washington-St. Louis Univ. (Mo.) (24-11) takes on No. 6 Luther College (33-9). The Central-Gustavus Adolphus winner will meet the Washington-Luther winner. 

The Iowa Conference had four teams selected. League tourney champion Coe College was sent to a playoff site at Bloomington, Ill.
