Dutch in second, third in heptathlon
PELLA—Day one of the Iowa Conference track and field multi-event championships wrapped up Friday evening with Central holding the top two spots in the men’s decathlon and sitting in second and third in the women’s heptathlon. While the multi-event portion of the league meet was going on, the Dutch were also hosting the Central Open.
Sophomore Kurtis Brondyke (Clinton) leads the decathlon after five events with 3,740 points and is followed closely by freshman Ethan Miller (Seymour) who has 3,701 points. Their closest competition at the halfway point of the competition is Cornell College’s James Wohrley (3,285).
Brondyke and Miller have combined to win each event so far and neither have finished lower than third in any one. Brondyke set four new personal bests Friday including in the 100 meter dash (11.17 seconds), the shot put (37 feet, 7.25 inches), the high jump (6-4.25) and the 400 meter dash (50.53 seconds) while Miller has set three new personal bests in the 100 meter dash (11.11), the shot put (35-9.5) and the 400 meter dash (51.83 seconds).
In the heptathlon junior Carissa Bentz (Ute, Boyer Valley HS) has 2,540 points and is followed by sophomore Jill Ziskovsky (Dallas Center, Dallas Center-Grimes) with 2,498 points as they both chase Simpson College’s Kinsey Bak who leads the event with 2,636 points.
Ziskovsky set a new personal best in the 100 meter hurdles Friday in 16.22 seconds. Bentz set three new personal bests through the first four events including in the 100 meter hurdles (16.74), the high jump (4-10.5) and the 200 meter dash (27.00 seconds).
Central Open—The Dutch hit NCAA Division III meet provisional qualifying standards in two events in the Central Open.
Junior Jordan Gegner (Martensdale, Martensdale-St. Marys) won the men’s 400 meter hurdles in a personal best and NCAA provisional qualifying time of 54.24 seconds. And senior Rachel Boeke (Cedar Rapids, Thomas Jefferson HS) took fourth in the women’s discus while recording an NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 140-03.
Sophomore Emily Teas (Indianola) broke the tape in the 400 meter dash in 49.16 seconds and also took second in the 200 meter dash in 26.25 seconds. Central got meet-leading leaps from freshman Caitlin Wilson (Oakland, Riverside HS) in the high jump (5-3.25) and the long jump (16-8) while junior Ashley Feldman (Alleman, North Polk HS) and freshman Liz Hasenmiller (Bettendorf, Davenport Assumption HS) finished in a three-way tie for first in the pole vault, clearing 8-8.25.
Senior Jess Clark (Port Byron, Ill., Riverdale HS) led a strong showing from the Dutch in the 1500, finishing second in 4:55.27 and was followed by junior Angie Berry (Norwalk) who finished third (4:56.72). Freshman Taylor Schuelke (Rosemount, Minn.) placed second in the high jump clearing the bar at 5-1.25.
Sophomore Amanda Mosinski (Packwood, Pekin HS) set a new personal best in a third-place finish in the 400 hurdles (66.83). Freshman Felicia Shunk (Bloomfield, Davis County HS) also set a new personal best and took third in the long jump with a distance of 15-10.25. Sophomore Kelsey Petersen (Waverly, Waverly-Shell Rock) was third in the javelin (110-4), and Dutch squads took third place in both the 4 x 100 meter relay and the 4 x 400 meter relay.
Junior Matt Patrick (Dallas Center, Dallas Center-Grimes) won the men’s 400 meter dash clocking 49.39. Junior Alex Miller (Adel, Van Meter HS) won the 800 meter run in 1:54.57. Senior Teddy Clark (Montgomery, Ill., Oswego HS) broke the tape in the 1500 meter run in 4:02.83. Freshman Chris Henely won the 110 meter hurdles in a personal best of 15.10 seconds, freshman Nick Vance (West Des Moines, Valley HS) won the high jump with a height of 6-0 and sophomore Matt Graber (Newton) won the shot put with a toss of 50-0.5. Dutch squads also won the 4 x 100 meter relay (41.95 seconds) and the 4 x 400 meter relay (3:24.39).
Freshman Allen Scovel (Runnells, Southeast Polk HS) set a new personal best in the 100 meter dash clocking a time of 11.01 seconds for third place. Freshmen Trevor Veach (Grinnell) and Kyle Wood (Newton) each set personal bests in both the 100 and 200 meter dashes. Wood was fifth in the 100 meter dash in 11.10 seconds and second in the 200 meter dash in 22.45 seconds. Veach was sixth in the 100 meter dash in 11.12 seconds and fifth in the 200 meter dash in 22.68 seconds.
Junior Derek Townsend (Perry) finished second in the 800 meter run (1:55.35), Gegner was second in the high jump (5-10), and freshman Josh Garrison (Maxwell, Collins-Maxwell HS) was second in the shot put (48-0.75). Sophomore Shane Hallengren (Estherville) was second in the triple jump with a new personal best of 48-8.75. Junior Luke Bolander (Des Moines, East HS) was third in the 400 meter dash in 50.19 seconds and freshman Matt Golden (Davenport, Assumption HS) was fourth in the javelin (148-06).
Senior Greg Foote (Maple Grove, Minn.) set new personal bests in both the pole vault, clearing a height of 12-7.5 for third place, and in the triple jump with a distance of 40-0 for third place also. And freshman Tyler Crouse (Hedrick, Pekin HS) recorded personal bests in three events Friday including the shot put (43-06), discus (149-09) and hammer throw (147-09).
The multi-event championships will continue Saturday at Ron and Joyce Schipper Stadium when the men resume the decathlon with the 110 meter hurdles at 10 a.m. and the women will resume the heptathlon with the long jump at 11 a.m.
