Central third again in league meet

CEDAR RAPIDS—A 5-2 victory over Wartburg College secured the Central College men’s tennis team’s fifth consecutive third-place finish at the Iowa Conference tournament Thursday.

Bad weather forced Central to play its first two matches indoors at Cornell College at Mount Vernon before playing the third-place match indoors at Coe College in Cedar Rapids. The Dutch were 5-0 winners over Cornell in the opening match, then were blanked 5-0 in the semifinals by Coe College. League tournament matches are stopped after a team is assured of victory.

Against Cornell the Dutch got victories from its top five singles positions with Luke Boyd (junior, Fort Dodge), Dan Bowser (sophomore, Fort Dodge), Jacob Dreyer (sophomore, Cedar Falls), Set Harris (freshman, Waverly, Neb.) and Chris Lensing (freshman, Spencer).

Central closes the dual-meet season with a 12-10 record. The Dutch haven’t finished lower than third in the conference since 1993.

The league’s flighted individual tournament will be staged in Cedar Rapids Friday and Saturday to wrap up Central’s season.
