April 29, 2009Central wins blowout at Cornell
MOUNT VERNON—After dropping a doubleheader to Cornell College on April 21 the Central College baseball team gave up only three hits and scored in each of the first five innings Wednesday en route to a 10-0 win.
Last Tuesday the teams combined for 44 hits and 39 runs, but it was Central providing all the offense this time. The Dutch pounded out 12 hits and put pressure on the Cornell (9-21, 6-12 Iowa Conference) defense which committed six errors.
“We threatened a lot early in the game,” said head coach Adam Stevens. “We were swinging the bats well today, just playing loose and relaxed.”
Third baseman Anthony Miller (sophomore, Davenport, Assumption HS) reached second following a throwing error on a bunt attempt before a Caleb Rangel (sophomore, Rock Island, Ill., Alleman HS) single brought him all the way home. Rangel then stole second and came around to score two batters later when a ground ball by first baseman Derek Knutson (senior, Richland, Wash., Yorkville (Ill.) HS) was booted in the field. The Dutch added to their lead in the second with a single run as catcher Josh Stanton (freshman, Homer Glen, Ill., Lockport Township HS) scored on a Rangel ground out to first base.
Three Central runs crossed the plate in the third with designated hitter Ben Chestnut (freshman, Bettendorf) singling home shortstop Mike Furlong (freshman, Davenport, Assumption HS), second baseman Dave Lakin (sophomore, Clinton) driving in Knutson and center fielder Ben Tressel (junior, Dubuque, Hempstead HS) driving in Lakin. In the fourth inning Rangel doubled, advanced to third on a groundout by right fielder Jarred Lackey (sophomore, Somerton, Ariz., Cibola HS) and scored on a wild pitch. And in the fifth Tressel doubled to left to drive in Lakin from second base before being driven in himself on a single to right by Miller.
Meanwhile, starter D.J. Glasgow (sophomore, Burlington) faced only three batters over the minimum of 15 in 5.0 innings of work while striking out three and giving up just two hits.
“D.J. (Glasgow) came out and had a great outing for us,” said Stevens. “He’s struggled a bit in his last couple of outing, but give him credit for coming back out today and really battling hard and getting the job done.”
Glasgow (5-4) gave way to Doug Eisenman (junior, Grundy Center) who threw 3.0 innings and faced only 10 batters while giving up one hit and striking out three.
A solo shot to left field off the bat of Furlong ended the scoring in the game and gave the Dutch the win by 10-run rule after only eight innings.
Central (15-19, 8-11 Iowa Conference) will end its regular season with a trip to Waverly Friday and Saturday to face Wartburg College (21-15, 13-8 Iowa Conference).
“Wartburg is a very good team,” Stevens said. “If we want to have a chance this weekend we need to play as well as we have shown we can this season.”
First pitch of the three-game series is set for 6 p.m. Friday.
