Dutch fall to Norse in automatic qualifier

CEDAR RAPIDS—The Central College women’s tennis team competed at the Iowa Conference Automatic Qualifier tourney Saturday, falling 5-0 to eventual tourney winner Luther College. The automatic qualifier, which determines who will get the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA tournament, was played between the top four teams in the league. Luther and Central were the second and third seeds, respectively, while Coe was the top seed.

The Dutch played tough at No. 1 doubles where junior Faith Bliss (Ottumwa) and freshman Kayla Donner (Metamora, Ill.) came up just short in a 9-8 loss. The No. 2 doubles team of senior Hilary Baehr (Des Moines, Roosevelt HS) and junior Sara Dale (Marshalltown) fell 8-2, and at No. 3 doubles freshmen Emily Swartz (Eldora, South Hardin HS) and Trinh Le (Des Moines, North HS) fell 8-1.

Luther then topped Central sophomore Carissa Bane (Des Moines, Southeast Polk HS) 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6 singles and Bliss 6-4, 6-0 at No 2 singles to wrap up the 5-0 win.

The automatic qualifier was the final tournament of the year for Central which finished the non-traditional season with a record of 5-3.
