April 22, 2009Central rallies past Grinnell
PELLA—Scoring super-tiebreaker wins in the final two matches, the Central College women’s tennis squad pulled off a 5-4 victory over Grinnell College Wednesday.
Central, 5-2 during its abbreviated spring campaign, was down 4-3. But Sara Dale (junior, Marshalltown) came back for a 6-4, 2-6, 10-8 win at No. 4 singles, and Emily Swartz (freshman, Eldora, South Hardin HS) prevailed at No. 5 singles 6-4, 3-6, 10-2.
Central also got a win at No. 6 singles from Carissa Bane (sophomore, Des Moines, Southeast Polk HS). In doubles, Faith Bliss (junior, Ottumwa) and Kayla Donner (freshman, Metamora, Ill., Metamora Township HS) were victorious at No. 1 doubles with Hilary Baehr (senior, Des Moines, Roosevelt HS) and Bliss winning at No. 2 doubles. Grinnell fell to 4-4.
The Dutch wrap up the spring season with the Iowa Conference NCAA qualifier at Cedar Rapids Saturday. The top four finishers from last fall’s conference tournament meet to determine the league’s automatic qualifier for the NCAA Division III tournament. No. 3-seeded Central takes on No. 2 Luther College at 11 a.m. League champion Coe College faces No. 4-seeded Cornell College in the other semifinal, with the two winners meeting for the tourney berth. Saturday’s results have no bearing on the league standings.
