April 18, 2009Dutch take two matches at home
PELLA—After a dominating performance Saturday morning in an 8-1 win over Loras College, the Central College men’s tennis team pulled out a 5-4 victory over Wartburg College in the afternoon.
Central collected a pair of 8-2 victories against Loras (3-11 overall) at the top two doubles spots as the team of Luke Boyd (junior, Fort Dodge) and Dan Bowser (sophomore, Fort Dodge) cruised at No. 1 doubles and Seth Harris (freshman, Waverly, Neb.) and Jacob Dreyer (sophomore, Cedar Falls) did the same at No. 2 doubles. At No. 3 doubles Jacob Veldhuizen (sophomore, Wausau, Wis., East HS) and Joel Druvenga (senior, Spencer) faced some resistance but pulled away to an 8-5 win.
Both Bowser and Dreyer recorded 6-0, 6-0 wins at Nos. 2 and 3 singles over the Duhawks. Boyd won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 singles, Harris won 6-4, 6-1 at No. 4 singles and Chris Lensing (freshman, Spencer) won at No. 5 singles 6-2, 6-2. Veldhuizen forced a super tiebreaker after losing the first set at No. 6 singles but was unable to complete the comeback falling 6-0, 1-6, 10-3.
After Wartburg concluded its own 9-0 win over Loras, Central faced off against the Knights.
Wartburg (12-10 overall) led the Dutch 2-1 after doubles play ended with Central’s lone victory coming from Dreyer and Harris at No. 2 doubles by a score of 8-5.
Boyd played two tough sets at No. 1 singles but fell just short in a 6-4, 6-4 loss and Dreyer put forth a strong second set effort at No. 3 singles before falling 6-2, 7-5. Bowser won a tight No. 2 singles match that included a second set tiebreaker 6-4, 7-6 while Harris faced little trouble in a 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 4 singles.
With only Nos. 5 and 6 singles still playing, the Dutch still trailed Wartburg 4-3. Both Lensing at No.5 and Veldhuizen at No. 6 won tight first sets before cruising to second set victories. Lensing won 6-4, 6-1 and Veldhuizen won 6-4, 6-0 to give Central their second victory of the day.
Central (12-11 overall) will play another twinbill Tuesday in Storm Lake. The Dutch will face Buena Vista Univ. at 10:30 a.m. and Martin Luther (Minn.) at 1 p.m. in their last action before heading to the Iowa Conference tournament April 30.
