April 17, 2009Central's Paulson third in Illinois
DECATUR, ILL.—Central College freshman Sarah Paulson (Ottumwa) carded a 6-over-par 78 and is tied for third after the first round of the 36-hole Millikin Univ. (Ill.) Spring Classic women’s golf tourney Friday.
Central is sixth in the 15-team tournament, played at the par-72 Red Tail Run Golf Club. The Dutch shot 346. Illinois Wesleyan Univ. is the first-round leader at 320, Rend Lake CC (Ill.) is 10 shots back, with Wheaton College (Ill.) third at 331, Hope College (Mich.) fourth at 334 and Washington-St. Louis Univ. (Mo.) at 343. No other Iowa Conference schools are in the field.
Eva Downes (junior, Woodstock, Ill., Marion Catholic Central HS) shot 86, with Ali Miller (freshman, Davenport, North HS) at 89, Abby Lukensmeyer (freshman, Hampton, Hampton-Dumont HS) at 93 and Allison Crooks (sophomore, Moline, Ill.) at 96.
Paulson, the Iowa Conference MVP, is part of a six-way logjam at 78. Kayla Eckelkamp of Maryville College (Mo.) leads with 76.
The tournament concludes Saturday.
Central’s second unit, the White team, played host to the Simpson College varsity at Edmundson Golf Course in Oskaloosa Friday. Simpson leads 368-396 heading into Saturday’s final round. Lindsey Ellenson (sophomore, Amana, Clear Creek-Amana HS) shot 94 for Central on the par-71 course.
