Central opens in third at Buena Vista

SPENCER—The Central College men’s golf team took advantage of favorable conditions to post a season-low 297 Friday but stands third in the 19-team Buena Vista Univ. Spring Invitational.

Iowa Conference rival Wartburg College fired 290 to lead the field at the par-72 Spencer Country Club course with Luther College at 296. Nebraska Wesleyan Univ. is two strokes behind Central in fourth at 298.

The tourney moves to the Lake Creek Golf Course in Storm Lake for Saturday’s final round.

Andrew Townsend (junior, Bettendorf, Pleasant Valley HS) is third individually with a 1-under par 71. Jason Harvey (sophomore, Goldfield, Clarion-Goldfield HS) is tied for 15th at 74, Andy Petersen (senior, Davenport, West HS) is tied for 20th at 75, Justin Smool (junior, Bagley, Panorama HS) shot 77 and Matt Vegter (freshman, Morrison, Ill.) had 79.

The Dutch are the defending champions in the tournament.
