Dutch can't find big hit in loss

PELLA—The Central College baseball team outhit Luther College 11-10 Wednesday but was unable to come up with the big hit with runners in scoring position as the Dutch were topped 5-2.

Central got on the board in the seventh inning when second baseman Mike Furlong (freshman, Davenport, Assumption HS) singled to left driving in first baseman Jason Hassman (junior, Nora Spring, NSRF HS) to cut the Luther (17-7, 8-3 Iowa Conference) lead to 4-1. That brought left fielder Caleb Rangel (sophomore, Rock Island, Ill., Alleman HS) to the plate with one out and the bases loaded. Rangel nearly gave the Dutch lead, but with his back to the fence Luther right fielder Joe Thompson snagged a would-be grand slam out of the air. Dutch catcher Blake Smith (junior, Polk City, North Polk HS) scored on the sacrifice fly, but Central couldn’t close the gap any further.

“We threatened a lot,” said head coach Adam Stevens. “We just need to get that big hit with runners in scoring position. When we did get that today on (Caleb) Rangel’s fly ball, they robbed a grand slam. But for the most part, we need to execute better in RBI situations.”

The Dutch stranded nine runners on the base paths and struck out 12 times.

Sophomore D.J. Glasgow (Burlington) started for the Dutch on the mound, pitching 8.2 innings while giving up 10 hits and five earned runs. He was relieved in the ninth by junior Trevor Talbott (Sioux City, East HS) who retired the only batter he faced.

Center fielder Ben Tressel (junior, Dubuque, Hempstead HS), Rangel, right fielder Jarred Lackey (sophomore, Somerton, Ariz., Cibola HS), and third baseman Anthony Miller (sophomore, Davenport, Assumption HS) each recorded a pair of hits.

Central (11-15, 6-7 Iowa Conference) hosts league leader and 14th-ranked Buena Vista Univ. beginning at 3 p.m. Friday for a three-game weekend series. The Dutch took one of three from Buena Vista (21-4, 8-2 Iowa Conference) last season.

“Right now our goal is to keep getting better and to win every series,” Stevens said. “We’re going to need real good defense this weekend, and if we execute I like our chances.”
