Central rolls to 13-0 win over Dubuque

PELLA—Behind six solid innings from sophomore D.J. Glasgow (Burlington) on the mound the Central College baseball team banged out 11 hits as the Dutch rolled to a 13-0 win over the Univ. of Dubuque Friday.

Glasgow (4-1) struggled with his control throughout, walking seven Spartan batters, but only gave up four hits and struck out four. Junior Josh Nalan (Sheffield, SCMT HS) worked the seventh inning and giving up one hit.

“D.J. (Glasgow) just battled on the mound for us today,” said head coach Adam Stevens. “He got into some jams early but worked out of them. That’s where the ball game was won.”

Dubuque (5-16, 0-7 Iowa Conference) threatened on multiple occasions but Glasgow managed to get outs when he needed them, stranding five runners in scoring position.

Central broke things open at the plate in the fourth inning. With a 2-0 lead the Dutch loaded the bases with no outs. A single by second baseman Dave Lakin (sophomore, Clinton) drove in third baseman Anthony Miller (sophomore, Davenport, Assumption HS) for the first run of the inning, and a double by first baseman Jason Hassman (Nora Springs, NSRF HS) scored Miller again to give the Dutch their eighth and final run of the inning.

Hassman led the way at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double and a home run while driving in four runs.

“Jason (Hassman) is an example of a guy with a great attitude and great work ethic who makes the most of his opportunities,” Steven said. “He really came through for us today.”

Senior Derek Knutson (Richland, Wash., Yorkville (Ill.) HS), who served as the designated hitter in the game,scored three times to up his career total to 102 runs scored, placing him fifth on Central’s leader board.

“This was a good start to the series for us,” said Stevens. “Our goal is always to win every series, so now we need to make sure that we come out mentally prepared tomorrow and get ourselves a couple more wins.”

Central (11-12, 6-4 Iowa Conference) and Dubuque will continue their three-game series at the A.N. Kuyper Athletics Complex baseball field in Pella tomorrow with a doubleheader tomorrow beginning at 1 p.m.
