Petersen cited as league golfer of the week

PELLA—Central College’s Andy Petersen (senior, Davenport, West HS), Angela Davis (freshman, West Des Moines, Valley HS) and Kurtis Brondyke (sophomore, Clinton) have each Iowa Conference player of the week honors in their respective sports. Petersen cited in golf--Petersen was named the league men’s golfer of the week for the fifth time in his career.

The two-time Iowa Conference MVP tied for fourth at the Illinois Wesleyan Invitational last Friday and Saturday at Normal, Ill. He fired 71-75—146 on the par-72 Ironwood Golf Course, competing in a field that included eight of the top 50 players in the NCAA Division III.

Central placed third in the 23-team tournament. Petersen and the Dutch return to action Friday and Saturday at the Wartburg Invitational in Waverly.

Davis tabbed again in softball—For the second time in three weeks Davis was named the conference softball player of the week.

The rookie second baseman delivered walk-off, game-winning hits to cap come-from-behind rallies against two nationally ranked opponents in four days last week. Last Tuesday her two-out RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning capped a three-run inning and let Central come from two runs down to defeat No. 17 Luther 4-3. Friday she lined a two-out, two-run double in the bottom of the seventh inning to cap a four-run frame and let Central come from three runs down to defeat No. 4 Washington-St. Louis (Mo.) 4-3.

Davis hit .375 in six games for the week. She’s hitting .348 for the season. The Dutch play host to No. 25-rated Wartburg College Tuesday at 3 p.m.

Brondyke honored in track and field—Brondyke was recognized in men’s track and field. Last Friday and Saturday Brondyke competed in his first career decathlon at the Central Invitational and took first place in a field of 17 competitors. He compiled 6,088 points, surpassing the NCAA Division III meet provisional qualifying standard.

Brondyke, a two-time first-team all-conference punter on the Dutch football team, received league football player of the week honors in 2007. He was an all-America honoree in the long jump last spring and received indoor track and field all-America recognition in March by placing sixth in the pentathlon at the NCAA Division III meet in Terre Haute, Ind.

Brondyke and the Dutch compete in the Jim Duncan Invitational at Drake Univ. in Des Moines Friday and Saturday.
