Central gets win in Wisconsin

WAUKESHA, WIS.—Recording its second win of the weekend, the Central College men’s tennis team rolled past Carroll Univ. (Wis.) Saturday 8-1.

The Dutch, 5-8, blitzed the Univ. of Dubuque 8-1 Friday in an indoor match that stretched until past midnight, then journeyed to Waukesha, Wis. for Saturday’s afternoon match.

While Central took all six singles matches in straight sets Saturday, they didn’t come easily. Coach Steve Tyler cited Jacob Dreyer’s (sophomore, Cedar Falls) effort at No. 3 singles in particular. Dreyer was a 7-6 (8-6), 6-1 winner.

“Jacob was down in the first set but came back and won the tiebreaker, then took the next set,” Tyler said. “He just battles and battles.”

Tyler liked his squad’s tenacity in both weekend matches.

“I thought in both matches, their fitness and mental toughness were the difference,” he said. “Up and down the lineup, there were some pretty close matches and they could have easily lost, but they played really well

“The guys are confident and very self-composed. It’s really a pleasure to coach them.”

Sunday the Dutch were slated to remain in Waukesha to take on Wisconsin Lutheran College and Aurora Univ. (Ill.)  However with some April snowfall looming and no available indoor playing facilities in Waukesha, the matches were called off and the Dutch started the trip back to Iowa.

Central treks to Indianola Tuesday to meet Simpson College in a 3 p.m. match. The Dutch were 9-0 winners over Simpson in an indoor match at Pella Feb. 21, Central’s third straight shutout of the Storm.
