Dutch score seven runs late to win game two

INDIANOLA—After a gut-wrenching extra inning loss in its first game Friday the Central College baseball team scored seven runs in the sixth inning of game two to earn a split against Simpson College.

In what was supposed to be a two seven inning games, Simpson (14-8 overall, 7-3 Iowa Conference) refused to go down quietly in game one. The Storm scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings, a single run in the bottom of the eighth to extend the game yet again and a passed ball with two outs in the ninth gave Simpson a 7-6 win.

Central was backed into a tight spot of its own in game two. The Dutch entered the sixth inning down by three but exploded for seven runs, highlighted by a three-run double from Anthony Miller (sophomore, Davenport, Assumptions HS), to take an 8-4 lead. Simpson scored once in the final frame but the Dutch prevailed 8-5.

“After losing a tough extra inning game like we did in game one it can be really hard to come back out against a good team like Simpson just 20 minutes later,” said head coach Adam Stevens. “I think it’s a real testament to the character of our guys for them to be able to come back late in the second game like they did.”

Sophomore D.J. Glasgow (Burlington) started game one on the mound, pitching seven innings and giving up five runs on seven hits. Senior Adam Squires (Center Point, Center Point Urbana HS) worked 1.2 innings on the mound and got the loss. Game two was split between Joel Pulliam freshman, Des Moines, Lincoln HS) and Doug Eisenman (junior, Grundy Center). Pulliam went 3.2 innings and Eisenman pitched the final 3.1 innings, earning the win and improving his record to 2-0 this season.

With the split Central’s record moves to 9-11 and 4-4 in the Iowa Conference. Central and Simpson will begin the final game of their weekend series at noon Saturday in Indianola.
