April 3, 2009Central's Petersen second at Illinois Wesleyan
NORMAL, ILL.—Central College senior Andy Petersen (senior, Davenport, West HS) fired a 1-under-par 71 and is in second place at the 23-team Illinois Wesleyan Invitational men’s golf tourney.
Petersen shot 36-35—71 at the Ironwood Golf Course and is a shot behind Illinois Wesleyan’s Mike DeRuntz heading into Saturday’s final round.
“Andy played extremely well,” coach Charlie Estabrook said. “He’s just hitting greens and fairways. He’s very consistent and is striking the ball well. I’m happy for him.”
Estabrook noted that Petersen’s stock is rising nationally as several of the top-50 players in the NCAA Division III are in the Illinois Wesleyan field.
The Dutch are sixth at 308. No. 5-ranked Illinois Wesleyan Univ. has a commanding 11-shot lead at 291, with Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.) and Benedictine Univ. (Ill.) next at 302 and Carthage College (Wis.) at 304.
Matt Stock (junior, Queen City, Mo., Schuyler County HS) is tied for 20th at 76, Andrew Townsend (junior, Bettendorf, Pleasant Valley HS) is at 80, Justin Smool (junior, Bagley, Panorama HS) is at 81 and Jason Harvey (sophomore, Goldfield, Clarion-Goldfield HS) is at 83.
"Matt Stock has earned his spot on the varsity team the past two weeks and has played pretty well for us," Estabrook said. "He's been very consistent and has a good attitude."
Central’s White team is in 10th place at 314. Matt Vegter (freshman, Morrison, Ill.) is tied for 14th at 75 and Joel Winters (junior, Hampton, Hampton-Dumont HS) shot 76 and is tied for 20th.
"Matt Vegter has been playing consistent golf for us this spring so far," Estabrook said. "He played very well today. He's mature for his age and very capable of giving us great scores and leadership.
"Joel Winters has been working on his consistency with his swing this spring. He played very well for us today. His attitude and work ethic are paying off for him."
Estabrook said a few bad holes were costly for many of the players.
“Big numbers hurt us," he said. "It was always one bad swing and we’d end up with a double (-bogey) or triple.
“But tomorrow’s a brand new day. It’s a chance to come back and show what we’re made of.”
