Central hosts state strength clinic

PELLA—The Iowa Strength and Conditioning Clinic will be staged at Central College Sunday, May 3.  

The clinic is sponsored by the National Strength and Conditioning Association. It’s open to students, strength and conditioning coaches, physical therapists, athletic trainers, personal trainers, coaches and other educators. Check-in begins at 8:30 a.m. and the clinic runs from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. in the Vermeer Science Center on the Central campus.

Featured sessions include “Total Motion Release and Posture Restoration,” with physical therapists Dave Vanderhoff and Shelly De Ruiter from Work Systems Rehab and Fitness in Pella. Central graduate Ike Hammerly, strength and conditioning coach at William Penn Univ., will discuss “General and Sports Specific Conditioning.” Shawn Baier, an Iowa State Univ. graduate student, will lead a session on “Nutrient Training and Supplementation.”  Central graduate Rusty Burney from the Univ. of Iowa basketball strength and conditioning staff and members of the Iowa football strength and conditioning staff will discuss their training programs and Bryan Dermody, assistant football strength and conditioning coach at the Univ. of Louisville, will present “Corrective Exercise Selection.”

The clinic fee through April 22 is $45 for NSCA members, $25 for NSCA student members and $50 for non-members. After April 22, the cost is $55 for NSCA members, $35 for NSCA students and $60 for non-members.

Central is a recognized leader in strength and conditioning. The college offers a unique strength and conditioning major through the exercise science department. Strength and conditioning coordinator Jake Anderson was named the NCAA Division III coach of the year in 2007 by American Football Monthly. Full-time assistant Kyle Johnson was added to the strength and conditioning staff in 2008.
