March 28, 2009Central stumbles at Augustana
MOLINE, ILL.—Augustana College (Ill.) rolled to straight-sets victories at all six singles spots and notched a 9-0 victory over the Central College men’s tennis team Saturday.
The match was originally slated to be part of a triangular played in Pella but was moved to indoor courts in Moline, Ill. because of bad weather conditions.
Augustana improved to 13-6 while Central fell to 3-8.
However the Central women’s squad recorded a 5-4 win over the Vikings as part of its non-traditional season. Faith Bliss (junior, Ottumwa), Sara Dale (junior, Marshalltown) and Emily Swartz (freshman, Eldora, South Hardin HS) scored singles wins at Nos. 2, 4 and 5, respectively. Central also was victorious at No. 2 doubles with Dale and Hilary Baehr (senior, Des Moines, Roosevelt HS) and at No. 3 doubles with Swartz and Trinh Le (freshman, Des Moines, North HS).
The Central men’s squad hopes to resume its outdoor schedule on the road next weekend. The Dutch travel to Waukesha, Wis. to meet Carroll College (Wis.) Saturday at 2 p.m. before meeting Wisconsin Lutheran the following day at 9:30 a.m. and Aurora (Ill.) at 12:30 p.m. The women are home Wednesday against Wartburg at 4 p.m.
