March 27, 2009Glasgow pitches Central to 9-2 victory
PELLA—Sophomore D.J. Glasgow (Burlington) held visiting Loras College to two runs in a complete game 9-2 victory for the Central College baseball team Friday in an Iowa Conference matchup at the A.N. Kuyper Athletics Complex field.
Loras (11-6 overall, 2-2 conference) scored both of its runs in the fourth inning on a two-out double by Austin Brown to cut Central’s lead to 3-2. Down by one run, the Duhawks threatened again in the sixth but centerfielder Ben Tressel (junior, Dubuque, Hempstead HS) made a diving play on a sinking line drive with a runner on second to end the inning.
“What really stood out for me today was our defense,” said head coach Adam Stevens. “We had (D.J.) Glasgow battling on the mound and getting us ground balls and the defense made some great plays behind him.”
The Dutch turned three double plays behind Glasgow (3-1) and made no errors.
Catcher Blake Smith (junior, Polk City, North Polk HS) gave Central some breathing room in the sixth inning with a three-run blast over the left field fence to increase the Dutch lead to 6-2. In the seventh, Smith knocked in two more on two-out single center to bring his total to five runs batted in on three hits for the day. Tressel drove in two runs for the Dutch, and freshman second baseman Mike Furlong (Davenport, Assumption HS) added three hits as well.
With the win, Central improves to 8-8 on the season and 3-1 in league play.
The last two games of the series, initially scheduled to begin Saturday at 1 p.m., have been moved to Sunday at 2 p.m. at the A.N. Kuyper Athletics Complex field in Pella due to cold weather forcasted for Saturday.
