March 18, 2009Central opens spring at Dutch Desert Classic
GOODYEAR, ARIZ.—Fading daylight shortened the men’s rounds to nine holes at the Dutch Desert Classic Tuesday where the Central white team tied for second and red team finished fourth, while the Central women finished fourth over 18 holes in each teams’ first outing of the spring.
Central hosted the one-day tournament in Arizona which was won on the men’s side by Division II national contender Grand Canyon Univ. (Ariz.) with a score of 146. Another Grand Canyon contingent tied for second with the Central white team shooting 156, and the Central red team shot 157.
J.B. Law of Grand Canyon shot 32 to lead all men over nine holes. Central freshman Danny Pattee (Avoca, Iowa, AHST HS) shot 35 to finish second overall, sophomore Chris Crawford (Conrad, BCLUW HS) shot 37 to finish fourth, and senior Andy Petersen (Davenport, West HS) and junior Andrew Townsend (Bettendorf, Pleasant Valley HS) shot 38 to tie for fifth.
Grand Canyon also scored a team win on the women’s side by shooting 321, followed by the Univ. of Wis.-Eau Claire (331), Southwest Minnesota State (360) and Central (362).
Grand Canyon’s Jennifer Lutz shot a 75 to take top honors for the women. Freshman Sarah Paulson (Ottumwa) led Dutch golfers shooting an 84 and placed seventh overall. Eva Downes (junior, Woodstock, Ill., Marian Central Catholic HS) shot 87 placing ninth, freshman Abby Lukensmeyer (Hampton, Hampton-Dumont HS) shot 95, freshman Ali Miller (Davenport, North HS) shot 96 and sophomore Molli O’Brien (Clarion, Clarion-Goldfield HS) shot 105 to round out the scoring for Central.
The Central men will return to action hosting the Central Dutch Classic at Copper Creek GC in Runnells, March 27-28. The women’s next outing will be April 4-5 at the Wartburg Invitational in Waverly at Centennial Oaks GC.
