Dutch drop two in Texas

DALLAS, TEXAS—The Central College tennis teams did not fare well in Dallas, Texas Tuesday where the women fell 9-0 to Trinity (Conn.) in the morning and 5-4 to Howard Payne (Texas) in the afternoon, and the men fell to Howard Payne 8-1.    

In their first match of the short spring season the Dutch women (0-2) were unable to score a win against Trinity. At No. 2 doubles junior Sara Dale (Marshalltown) and freshman Emily Swartz (Eldora, South Hardin HS) fell 8-5, and Dale managed to push her No. 3 singles match to three sets in a 5-7, 6-3, 10-8 loss.

The women tried to shake off the morning loss and notch a win in their second match of the day but came up just short against Howard Payne. Central led 2-1 after an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles from junior Faith Bliss (Ottumwa) and freshman Kayla Donner (Metamora, Ill.) and an 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles from sophomore Carissa Bane (Des Moines, Southeast Polk HS) and freshman Trinh Le (Des Moines, North HS).

But the Dutch were only able to record a pair of singles victories as Howard Payne pulled away to a 5-4 win. Bliss was a 6-0, 6-3 winner at No. 1 singles and Swartz won at No. 3 singles 6-3, 2-6, 6-1, but two other three set matches didn’t go in Central’s favor. At No. 2 singles Donner lost 5-7, 6-1, 6-3 and Le lost at No. 5 singles 7-6, 5-7, 6-1.

The Dutch men (3-7) played three strong doubles matches against Howard Payne but was not able to record a win. The No. 1 doubles team of Junior Luke Boyd (Fort Dodge) and sophomore Dan Bowser (Fort Dodge) fell 8-5 as did the No. 3 doubles team of sophomore Jacob Veldhuizen (Wausua, Wis., East) and Joel Druvenga (Spencer). Sophomore Jacob Dreyer (Cedar Falls) and freshman Seth Harris (Waverly, Neb.) lost 8-6 at No. 2 doubles.

In singles Bowser managed to win a three-set match 6-0, 3-6, 7-5 at No. 2 singles. Harris also went to three sets at No. 4 singles, but was defeated 6-1, 5-7, 10-5.

The Central women will next be in action against Morningside in Fort Dodge on March 25 at1 p.m. The men will return to action on March 28 when they will host Augustana (Ill.) and Dubuque with matches beginning at 9 a.m. at the Kuyper Athletic Complex tennis courts.
