Central gains split on Lythberg 3-hitter

TUCSON, ARIZ..—Pitcher Kiley Lythberg (sophomore, Mt. Prospect, Ill.) tossed a three-hitter as the Central College softball team rebounded with a 6-1 victory over Augsburg College (Minn.) after defending NCAA Division III champion Wis.-Eau Claire overpowered the Dutch 7-2 Saturday night.

Lythberg (2-0) struck out nine hitters and walked none while yielding one unearned run in her second complete game victory in two days. Central jumped on top with a three-run first inning, getting back-to-back triples from second baseman Angela Davis (freshman, West Des Moines, Valley HS) and third baseman Afton Nelson (junior, Bettendorf, Pleasant Valley HS). Designated player Rachel Everingham (freshman, Georgetown, Ill., Ridge Farm HS) had two hits as did center fielder Alysha Overturf (senior, Bettendorf, Pleasant Valley HS). Left fielder Hannah Weindruch (senior, Bettendorf, Pleasant Valley HS) belted a solo home run in the fifth inning.

Central (3-1) tagged three Augsburg pitchers for nine hits as the Auggies tumbled to 2-8.

No. 2-rated Wis.-Eau Claire (1-1) scored in each of the first four innings and had six extra-base hits as part of a nine-hit attack. Central designated player Ryann Engholm (senior, Bloomington, Minn., Thomas Jefferson HS) doubled, stole a base and scored in the second inning, then walked and scored in the seventh.

Wis.-Eau Claire all-American hurler Jenny Ross limited the Dutch to two hits in five innings.

“I don’t like losing 7-2 but as you look at it, you see some things that can be corrected over time,” coach George Wares said.

Pitcher Megan Swingen (senior, Woden, Woden-Crystal Lake HS) took the loss, yielding seven runs and eight hits in 3.1 innings. Junior Allyse Vander Plaats (Apple Valley, Calif., Naperville North, Ill. HS) threw 2.2 innings of scoreless relief in her collegiate debut, giving up one hit and striking out two.

“Allyse was a pleasant surprise,” said Wares, who was also happy with the lift Central got in the nightcap from Lythberg.

“Kiley was sharp for the second start in a row,” he said.

Central takes on Wis.-Platteville Sunday at 5:30 p.m. (Iowa time) and Lakeland College (Wis.) at 8 p.m. A live Webcast of the first game Sunday can be accessed through www.kniakrls.com or the Central athletics Web site, www.central.edu/athletics.
