March 6, 2009Central gets two NCAA pentathlon qualifiers
PELLA—Central College produced two NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships provisional qualifiers at the Central Pentathlon Friday night.
Kurtis Brondyke (sophomore, Clinton) won the event with 3,590 points followed by Ethan Miller (freshman, Seymour) with 3,440. Both topped the NCAA provisional standard of 3,400 points and are the second- and third-highest pentathlon totals in school history, trailing only Peter Wagner’s 3,736 points scored in 2003. Brondyke’s total stands third in Division III thus far and Miller’s is ninth, leaving both in strong contention for spots in the national meet next Friday and Saturday at Terre Haute, Ind. Brondyke topped his previous career best by 137 points while Miller improved by 422 points.
The Univ. of Northern Iowa’s Chris Kasel was third with 2,589 points while Central’s Greg Foote (senior, Maple Grove, Minn.) was fifth with 1,977.
Coach Joe Dunham said he’ll likely send about 20 athletes to the Iowa State Last Chance Open in Ames Saturday as the Dutch bid for additional NCAA meet spots.
