Ley repeats as all-league pick

PELLA—Central College point guards Miguel Ley (junior, San Antonio, Texas, Judson HS) and Laura Porter (senior, Monroe, PCM HS) each gained all-Iowa Conference basketball recognition for the second time.

Ley, a 6-foot three-time letterwinner, was a first-team pick for the men’s squad after being named to the second team a year ago.

Porter, a 5-7 four-time letterwinner, was a second-team selection for the women’s squad. She was a first-team all-league honoree in 2006-07 before missing nearly all of the 2007-08 season with injury.

Loren Liming (junior, Ames, Gilbert HS), a 6-7 forward, received honorable mention for the men’s squad.

Ley was the conference’s leading scorer with a 17.4-point average. He’s scored 1,053 career points. He climbed four spots into 17th on Central’s career scoring list with a season remaining and is 10th in career steals with 90.

Ley was Central’s second leading 3-point goal scorer with 33. He shot 44.7 percent from the field, 31.4 percent from 3-point range and ranked sixth in the league in free throw percentage with a team-high 79.8 percent. Ley was fourth in the conference in assists (2.9) and sixth in steals (1.5) while averaging 2.7 rebounds.

One of just two returning starters from last season, Ley led Central to a 13-13 record and an Iowa Conference tournament berth.

Porter fought her way back from last year’s season-ending injury to average a team-high 15.0 points a game with 4.4 rebounds. She was the league’s fourth leading scorer while shooting 46.1 percent from the field and a team-high 79.1 percent from the free throw line. She was fifth in the league in assists (3.1) and tied for 10th in steals (1.9).

Porter finished in 12th place on Central’s career scoring list with 1,035 points. She ranks third in career assists (292) and seventh in career steals (138). Porter and the Dutch posted an 8-17 record, doubling last year’s season wins total in coach Jerry Nikkel’s first season.

Liming was the Central men’s squad’s second-leading scorer in his first full season with the Dutch, averaging 12.0 points. He was third in the league in field goal percentage (57.3), fourth in blocked shots (1.4) and fifth in rebounding (6.3).
