Feb. 28, 2009Boyd registers big win for Central
CEDAR RAPIDS—Luke Boyd (junior, Fort Dodge) scored an upset victory at No. 1 singles but the Central College men’s tennis squad was stifled by undefeated Coe College 8-1 Saturday.
The Dutch were earlier also defeated 8-1 by Carthage College (Wis.).
Against Coe Boyd knocked off Victor Khristenko 7-6, 6-4. Central (1-6) dropped all five of its other singles matches in straight sets as the Kohawks improved to 10-0.
“Luke just really played within himself,” coach Steve Tyler said. “It was a great match.”
Boyd teamed with Dan Bowser (sophomore, Fort Dodge) at No. 1 doubles for Central’s lone victory against Carthage (3-2), stopping Sammy Ramoni and J.T. Delk 8-6.
“I was most pleased,” he said. “There’s no question we’re improving and the guys are getting more confident. It’s not easy getting beat 8-1, 8-1, but we’ve played five of the top schools we’ll face all year.”
Central travels to Mount Vernon next Saturday to take on Cornell College at noon before meeting Principia College (Ill.) at 3 p.m.
