Feb. 21, 2009Central downs Simpson, falls to Graceland
PELLA—The Central College men’s tennis team’s debut on its new Mondotrack competition surface in H.S. Kuyper Fieldhouse was a smooth one as the Dutch blanked Simpson College 9-0. But NAIA powerhouse Graceland Univ. returned the favor in the nightcap, shutting out Central 9-0.
Central, 1-5 in the spring season under new coach Steve Tyler, won four of its six singles matches against Simpson in straight sets. Graceland (3-1), which also defeated Simpson 9-0, won all six singles matches against the Dutch in straight sets.
The new playing surface in H.S. Kuyper Fieldhouse was installed in early January and has merited high marks from Tyler and his squad, but Saturday’s matches could be the only ones on the Central schedule played there. The Dutch don’t return home until a March 28 triangular with Augustana College (Ill.) and the Univ. of Dubuque. Weather permitting, those matches will be played on the A.N. Kuyper Athletics Complex outdoor courts.
Central will be indoors next Saturday, traveling to Coe College in Cedar Rapids. The Dutch take on Carthage College (Wis.) at 12:30 p.m. and Iowa Conference title contender Coe at 4 p.m. The Kohawks defeated Central 6-3 in the regular season last year and 5-0 in the league tournament.
