Feb. 14, 2009Brondyke, Clark win at Monmouth
MONMOUTH, ILL.—Each capturing the 5,000 meters and the pentathlon, the Central College men’s and women’s indoor track and field squads placed fourth and sixth, respectively, at the Monmouth (Ill.) Fighting Scot Invitational Saturday.
Defending NCAA Division III champion Illinois Wesleyan racked up 170 points to take the eight-team women’s division, followed by Washington-St. Louis (Mo.) with 101.5. The Dutch were sixth with 58 points.
Perennial power Wis.-La Crosse took the eight-team men’s division with 137 points, outdistancing host Monmouth’s 109. Washington-St. Louis followed with 100.83 and Central was fourth with 70.
The Dutch women dominated the 5,000 meters. Junior Angie Berry (Norwalk) turned in a season-best 18:15.60 to take first place by nearly 42 seconds, with Amy Ledvina (junior, Toledo, South Tama HS) third (19:19.10) and Amber Mayer (junior, Essex, Shenandoah HS) fourth (19:19.50).
Central had the only entries in the women’s pentathlon, which has been added as an event at the Iowa Conference indoor meet Feb. 27-28 at Waverly. Freshman Caitlin Wilson (Oakland, Riverside HS) edged sophomore Jill Ziskovsky (Dallas Center, Dallas Center-Grimes HS), 2,852 to 2,815. Wilson was 148 points shy of the NCAA Division III meet provisional qualifying standard. Carissa Bentz (junior, Ute, Boyer Valley HS) was third with 2,723 and Felicia Shunk (freshman, Bloomfield, Davis County HS) was fourth with 2,247.
Rachelle Tipton (junior, Newton) was third in the 800 meters (2:22.66) while Rachel Boeke (senior, Cedar Rapids, Jefferson HS) was fourth in the shot put (39 feet, 10.75 inches). The Dutch were second in the 4x200-meter relay (1:50.16) and third in the 4x400-meter relay (4:10.64).
Brondyke wins men’s pentathlon—Central also had the only entrants in the men’s pentathlon and Kurtis Brondyke (sophomore, Clinton) won with 3,303 points in his first pentathlon. He was 97 points short of the NCAA provisional standard.
Freshman Ethan Miller (Seymour) was second with 3,018 points followed by Greg Foote (senior, Maple Grove, Minn.) (2,993) and Nick Vance (freshman, West Des Moines, Valley HS) (2,883).
Teddy Clark (senior, Montgomery, Ill., Oswego HS) prevailed in the 5,000 meters, winning in 15:46.16. Jaron Byrum (senior, Mount Union, New London HS) was third (15:49.78).
Matt Graber (sophomore, Newton) took second in the shot put (49-8.25) and fourth in the weight throw (51-3). Josh Garrison (freshman, Maxwell, Collins-Maxwell HS) followed in fifth in the shot put (48-3.5). Jordan Gegner (junior, Martensdale, Martensdale-St. Marys HS) was fourth in the high jump (6-3.5). Derek Townsend (junior, Perry) had sixth-place finishes in the 800 (1:58.86) and the mile (4:31.05).
The Dutch were third in the 4x200-meter relay (1:34.69) and fifth in the 4x400-meter relay (3:30.25).
Central travels to Cedar Falls next Saturday for the UNI-Dome Open.
