Women's basketball | Feb. 11, 2009

Sarah PaulsonINDIANOLA—After bolting to an early lead, the Central College women’s basketball team was hit with a 22-1 barrage as No. 15 Simpson College clinched the Iowa Conference title with a 105-66 rout Wednesday night.

Opening by hitting 11 of their first 18 shots, the Dutch (8-14 overall, 4-9 conference) were up 26-20 with 11 minutes left in the first half. But Simpson (20-3 overall, 12-2 conference) turned a 28-25 deficit into a 47-29 advantage in a little more than 6 minutes and was up 53-31 at intermission, then hit 63.3 percent from the floor in the second half.

Central’s shooting touch cooled after its opening flurry, hitting 36.6 percent for the night to Simpson’s 52.6 percent. Simpson also held a 48-42 rebounding advantage and Central committed 25 turnovers.

Senior guard Laura Porter (Monroe, PCM HS) was the only Central player to crack double figures, scoring 15 points. Freshmen Sarah Paulson (Ottumwa) and Melanie Hopkins (Earlham) each scored nine while center Andrea Clark (sophomore, Guthrie Center) had eight points and a game-high 10 boards, along with three blocks and three assists.

Porter upped her career scoring total to 975 points. She needs to score 25 points in her final three regular-season games to become the 12th Central player to crack the 1,000-point mark.

Central returns home Saturday for a league women’s-men’s doubleheader against Luther College, starting at 2 p.m. at P.H. Kuyper Gymnasium. The Norse knocked off second-place Wartburg College Wednesday, 67-65, improving to 7-6 in the league and 8-13 overall. Luther defeated Central at Decorah 69-62 Dec. 3.

Saturday’s games will be broadcast on KRLS-FM (92.1) with live stats and a video Webcast available on the Central athletics Web site at www.central.edu/athletics.
