Men struggle offensively in loss

Men's basketball | Feb. 7, 2009

Miguel LeyDUBUQUE—Despite hitting 5-of-10 three pointers in the second half Saturday the Central College men’s basketball team was unable to come back from an eight-point halftime deficit in a 71-61 loss to the Univ. of Dubuque.

Both teams struggled in the first half with Central hitting only 9-of-23 field goals, including 0 for 4 from three-point range, while Dubuque was 11-of-28 and was good on 2-of-6 three pointers.

The Dutch (11-9, 5-6 Iowa Conference) managed to turn things around from beyond the arc after the intermission, but still only managed to shoot 39.4 percent for the half. Dubuque heated up from all over the court shooting 56.5 percent from the field.

Guard Miguel Ley (San Antonio, Texas, Judson HS) led Central with 14 points and recorded five steals in the game. Center Loren Liming (Ames, Gilbert HS) was the only other Dutch player to reach double digits with 13 points and made a run at the double-double grabbing nine rebounds.

Central returns to action on Wednesday against Simpson College in Indianola. Simpson is 6-16 overall and 2-11 in the conference after falling to Wartburg 85-71 Saturday. Central defeated Simpson in their previous meeting 79-53 at Pella on Jan. 21.

The contest in a women’s-men’s doubleheader with the men tipping off at 8 p.m.
