Jan. 31, 2009Dutch win in doubles but lose two matches
DECORAH—Central College’s top two doubles teams posted a pair of victories but the Dutch men’s tennis team concluded its season-opening weekend with a 7-2 loss at Luther College and a 5-4 setback against Macalester College (Minn.). Luke Boyd (junior, Fort Dodge) and Dan Bowser (sophomore, Fort Dodge) surprised Luther’s Max Piepkorn and Mark Mateski 9-8, then scored an 8-6 win over Macalester.
Central (0-3) also prevailed against Luther and Macalester at No. 2 doubles with the team of Jacob Dreyer (sophomore, Cedar Falls) and Seth Harris (freshman, Waverly, Neb.), winning both matches 8-6.
Harris was victorious at No. 4 singles against Macalester as well. Freshman Chris Lensing (Spencer) picked up Central’s other point with a 6-7, 6-2, 10-3 win at No. 5 singles.
After a whirlwind first week on the job, new coach Steve Tyler and his squad get to log plenty of practice time before returning to action. The Dutch make their home debut on the new Mondo SX surface in H.S. Kuyper Fieldhouse Saturday, Feb. 21, playing host to Simpson College at 9 a.m. and Graceland Univ. at 3 p.m. Last season Graceland blanked the Dutch 9-0 but Central swept Simpson 9-0 twice.
