Dutch among nation's defensive leaders

PELLA—The Central College men’s basketball team is ranked among the national defensive leaders according to this week’s NCAA Division III statistics. The Dutch (11-7 overall, 5-4 Iowa Conference) rank seventh out of 391 Division III schools in blocked shots per game with 5.6. Central is 10th in field goal percentage defense, limiting opponents to 38.4 percent shooting. And Central is 19th in scoring defense, allowing 60.9 points per game.  

Individually forward Loren Liming (junior, Ames, Gilbert HS) is 36th in field goal percentage (58.1). Center Zach Cooper (junior, Johnston) is 46th in blocked shots per game (1.8).

Central is home Saturday to tackle conference leader Buena Vista Univ., rated 10th in the nation by D3hoops.com. The Dutch threw a scare into Buena Vista before falling 72-71 in overtime in the teams’ previous meeting in Storm Lake Jan. 10.

Saturday’s game is part of a women’s-men’s doubleheader, with the women’s game tipping off at 2 p.m. at P.H. Kuyper Gymnasium and the men’s game at 4 p.m. The games will be broadcast on KRLS-FM (92.1) with a video Webcast and live stats available through the Central athletics Web site at www.central.edu/athletics.
