DUBUQUE—Bidding for a road upset, Central College saw an early 13-point lead slip away as Loras College rallied for a 60-56 Iowa Conference men’s basketball victory.
But the Dutch staged a comeback of their own late in the second half before falling to 9-7 overall and 3-4 in league play. Down 49-42, Central whittled the gap to 49-46, only to have Loras rebound with a 6-0 spurt for a. But aided by some shaky Loras free throw shooting, Central managed to climb within 58-56 with 3 seconds left on a Mark Holan (junior, Fontanelle, Nodaway Valley HS) 3-pointer. However a final Loras free throw clinched it.
Central limited Loras to 32.8-percent shooting while hitting 44.9 percent, but was outrebounded 38-36 and committed 19 turnovers. Guard Miguel Ley (junior, San Antonio, Texas, Judson HS) had 13 points and three assists while Holan and forward Loren Liming (junior, Ames, Gilbert HS) each scored 10. Liming had a game-high nine rebounds and guard Justin Madsen (junior, Fort Dodge, St. Edmond HS) grabbed six.
Central returns home to face Simpson College Wednesday in a women’s-men’s doubleheader at P.H. Kuyper Gym. The women’s game starts at 6 p.m. with the men’s game at 8 p.m. The Storm (6-10 overall, 2-5 conference) did not play Monday. The Dutch won twice against Simpson last year after going 0-3 against the Storm in 2006-07.
