1993 NCAA Div. III champions
DUBUQUE—Central College ran into another hot-shooting women’s basketball team and was outscored at Loras College Monday, 96-69.
Loras (11-6 overall, 6-2 Iowa Conference) hit 63.8 percent from the floor (37-58), including a torrid 67.9 percent in the second half when the Duhawks erupted for 51 points. Meanwhile Central (6-10 overall, 2-5 conference) connected on just 37.5 percent.
Loras was also efficient from long range, hitting 13-of-22 3-point shots (59.1 percent) while Central knocked down just 3-of-15.
Senior guard Laura Porter (Monroe, PCM HS) had 22 points for the Dutch, who were playing their first game since four-year regular Emily De Jong (senior, Ankeny) was forced to the sidelines by injury. She was hurt in Saturday’s loss to Coe College and may be out for the season, leaving the undersized Dutch with little depth inside.
Guard Megan Carman (senior, Newton) had 10 points and guard Jordan Waddell (sophomore, Guthrie Center) added nine. Guard Sarah Paulson (freshman, Ottumwa) made her first collegiate start and shared team rebounding honors with freshman forward Haley Brillhart (Pella), each pulling down four.
Loras, which led 45-35 at halftime, got 26 points from guard Lindsay Bava and 20 from guard Sarah Pillon. Central was outrebounded 38-28.
The Dutch must quickly gear up for yet another high-scoring opponent as No. 10-rated Simpson College visits in a women’s-men’s doubleheader starting at 6 p.m. at P.H. Kuyper Gymnasium. Live stats and a video webcast are available through the Central athletics Web site at www.central.edu/athletics.
