Women's basketball | Jan. 17, 2009

Ashley Gerst PELLA—Coe College hit a sizzling 59.7 percent from the floor and rolled up a 90-66 Iowa Conference victory over the Central College women’s basketball team Saturday.

A disappointing night for the Dutch (6-9 overall, 2-4 conference) turned even bleaker when senior forward Emily De Jong (Ankeny), a four-year standout, went down with what may be a season-ending injury.

Coe (8-7 overall, 2-4 conference) drained 23 of 35 first-half shots for 65.7 percent and sprinted to a 55-30 lead. Center Brittany Norris had 20 points for the Kohwaks while forward Sarah Anciaux had 19 points and 12 rebounds.

“We weren’t stopping anything inside,” coach Jerry Nikkel. “Our post defense was just poor all night long. They were making high percentage shots the whole first half. We couldn’t move them and make them shoot from a new location.”

Guard Laura Porter (senior, Monroe, PCM HS) had 12 points for Central while guard Ashley Gerst (junior, Columbus Junction, Wapello HS), and guard Sarah Paulson (freshman, Ottumwa) each had 11 points. Gerst was the top rebounder with five.

The Dutch shot 39.7 percent from the field and were outrebounded 46-25.

Central heads to Dubuque Monday to meet Loras College at the start of a three-game week. The women’s-men’s doubleheader starts at 6 p.m. Loras is 10-6 overall and 5-2 in the league after a 77-75 victory at Storm Lake Saturday.
