Cornell topples Dutch men's basketball squad

Justin MadsenPELLA—Cornell College knocked down eight of its first nine shots en route to a 62-49 Iowa Conference victory over the Central College men’s basketball team Saturday. Cornell (9-2 overall, 2-0 conference) leaped to a 25-5 lead in the game’s first eight minutes before Central used a 17-5 burst late in the first half to claw within 32-24 with 4:07 remaining. But Cornell regained its footing, taking a 37-26 halftime lead and hitting two quick buckets to start the second half. The Rams were up by double-digits the rest of the way.

Cornell shot 57.1 percent from the field in the first half and 52.1 percent for the game to Central’s 32.1 percent as the Rams placed four players in double figures. Central was outrebounded 36-29.

Guard Miguel Ley (junior, San Antonio, Texas, Judson HS) had 15 points for Central while forward Preston Davidson (junior, Northwood, Northwood-Kensett HS) had 10. Forward Mark Holan (junior, Fontanelle, Nodaway Valley HS) had a game-high seven rebounds.

Central travels to Waverly Wednesday for a women’s/men’s conference doubleheader at Wartburg College. The women’s game tips off at 6 p.m. with the men’s game at 8 p.m. The Knights took a 4-5 overall and 0-1 conference mark into play Saturday’s game against Loras College.
