2014 NCAA Div. III tournament qualifier
PELLA—Monmouth (Ill.) made it to the free throw line 34 times Wednesday night but tough defense and accurate shooting led Central College to a 78-62 victory.
With 7:38 left in the first half forward Mark Holan (junior, Fontanelle, Nodaway Valley HS) provided a spark for the Dutch, intercepting a pass from Monmouth’s Zach Ott and taking it all the way down the court finishing with a one-handed dunk to give Central an eight point lead. From that point on Central’s lead rarely dipped below double digits.
Monmouth (3-6 overall) hit 23 of 34 from the charity stripe (67.6 percent) but was cold from the floor making only 31.6 percent while the Dutch were 57 percent from the field including seven of 13 from beyond the arc. It was the third straight game Central has held their opponents under 35 percent shooting.
Junior guard Miguel Ley (San Antonio, Texas, Judson HS) led all scorers with 18 points and hit both of his three point attempts. Ley also pulled down five rebounds. Guard Justin Madsen (Fort Dodge, Saint Edmond HS) scored 11 points and grabbed five boards, while Holan, forward Zach Cooper (Johnston) and center Loren Liming (Ames, Gilbert HS) each added eight points of their own.
Ott led Monmouth with 13 points and made all four of his free throw attempts while Kyle Weyeneth added seven points and was six of seven from the line.
Central (6-1, 2-0 Iowa Conference) will take on Martin Luther (Minn.) Friday night at 7:30. Martin Luther is currently 5-4 and defeated Mayville State (N.D.) 80-68 Tuesday. Last year Central came away from New Ulm, Minn. With a 85-72 victory over the Knights.
