Reid ImermanMILWAUKEE, WIS.—Central College’s freshman-dominated wrestling team had seven placewinners in taking fifth out of 12 teams Saturday at the Milwaukee School of Engineering (Wis.) Invitational.

Lakeland College (Wis.) won the team title with 125 points, followed by Wis.-Oshkosh (117) and Wis.-Platteville (98.5). Central (70) finished one point out of fourth place behind the host school.

“We really had some tremendous efforts out of everybody today,” said head Eric Van Kley. “From top to bottom the effort was as good I’ve seen out of these guys.”

Sophomore Curtis Hobbs (Grinnell) placed for the third time in three tournaments this year by finishing sixth at 141 pounds.

Two Dutch wrestlers placed at 157 pounds. Freshman Reid Imerman (Guthrie Center) finished third and freshman Jared Hermann (Stockton, Ill.) placed sixth.

“Reid (Imerman) just continues to go out and get better every time he wrestles,” Van Kley said. “And Jared (Hermann) saw his first action of the season because he came out late after football, and this was just a great start for him.”

Sophomore Kyle Ray (Greenfield, Nodaway Valley HS) was fifth at 174 pounds, sophomore Nate Fell (Avoca, AHST HS) was fourth at 184 pounds, freshman Kyle Patterson (Collins, Collins-Maxwell HS) was sixth at 197 pounds and sophomore Ted Dirkx (Alleman, North Polk HS) was fifth at 285 pounds.

Van Kley felt the experience of wrestling non-conference opponents was good for his young team.

“I think it showed our guys that outside of the Iowa Conference they can compete with a lot of people,” he said. “So it was a good learning experience and they got to see just how strong the Iowa Conference is.”

Central will take its 0-2 dual meet record to Galesburg, Ill. on Thursday for a pair of matches against Knox College (Ill.) and Augustana College (Ill.) at 6 p.m. Knox placed ninth in the team standings at the Milwaukee School of Engineering (Wis.) Invitational Saturday and Augustana will come in with an 0-4 dual record after losing three matches at the Wis.-La Crosse duals Saturday, including two matches to nationally ranked foes.
