1993 NCAA Div. III champions
DECORAH—An 8-0 run in the closing minutes let Luther College hold off the Central College women’s basketball team 69-62 in the Iowa Conference opener for both clubs Wednesday.
Despite trailing much of the way, the Dutch were up 57-56 when guard Laura Porter (senior, Monroe, PCM HS) scored with 3:54 left, but Luther put up eight unanswered points and secured the win. Guard Amanda Dahlseng hit eight of 11 shots from the field and scored a game-high 25 points for the Norse.
Porter had 17 points, four assists, seven rebounds and made six steals, one shy of the school mark set by Aanna Hanson in 1997. Guard Sarah Paulson (freshman, Ottumwa) had 15 points and three assists while guard Ashley Gerst (junior, Columbus Junction, Wapello HS) had 14 points.
Luther held an oversized 40-27 advantage on the boards. Central shot 46.6 percent from the field to 45.5 percent for the Norse, but both squads were generous with the ball as Luther committed 25 turnovers and Central was guilty of 21.
After seven road contests the Dutch finally open their home schedule Saturday with an Iowa Conference women’s-men’s doubleheader against the Univ. of Dubuque. Game time is 2 p.m. at P.H. Kuyper Gymnasium.
Dubuque, 2-4 overall, dropped its league opener at home to Wartburg Wednesday night, 69-55.
