Second-half surge carries Upper Iowa

Women's basketball | Nov. 25, 2008

Laura PorterFAYETTE—A 17-5 burst early in the second half broke open a tight game and gave Upper Iowa Univ. an 87-65 victory over the Central College women’s basketball team Tuesday night.

The Dutch (1-3) trailed by as many as 9 points in the first half but whittled the margin to 32-30 at intermission as freshman Sarah Paulson (Ottumwa) hit a layup with 8 seconds remaining.

But NCAA Division II Upper Iowa (2-1) hit a torrid 60.5 percent from the field in the second half while Central connected on just 31.6 percent.

Paulson came off the bench to lead Central with 16 points. She’s hit double figures in all four games this season. Guard Megan Carman (senior, Newton) had 12 points while guard Laura Porter (senior, Prairie City, PCM HS) and forward Emily De Jong (senior, Ankeny) each scored 10. Porter also passed out six assists while coming up with three steals and two blocks. De Jong and sophomore center Andrea Clark (Guthrie Center) each pulled down 10 rebounds.

Upper Iowa outshot the Dutch 50.8 percent to 34.3 percent for the night, and held a 40-37 rebounding edge. Central committed 21 turnovers and the Peacocks made 20.

Central heads to another out-of-state tournament next weekend, the Monmouth College (Ill.) Thanksgiving Tournament. The Dutch meet tourney host Monmouth at 7 p.m. Saturday, then play either Rockford College (Ill.) or Robert Morris College (Ill.) Sunday afternoon. Central last played Monmouth in 2002 and holds a 2-0 lead in the all-time series. The Scots  graduated just one player from last year’s 7-15 club and are off to a 3-0 start, defeating North Park Univ. Tuesday night 59-55 after whipping Augustana College (Ill.) Saturday 83-59.
