Kurtis Brondyke

Four from Central receive conference honors

PELLA—Central College punter Kurtis Brondyke (sophomore, Clinton) is a first-team pick for the second time on the all-Iowa Conference football team.

Brondyke was Central’s lone first-team selection. Offensive lineman Spenser Remick (senior, Hillsboro, Mount Pleasant HS), a first-team pick a year ago, was a second-team honoree. Wide receiver Matt VerMeer (senior, Montezuma) was also tabbed for the second team while defensive stinger Shane Wong (sophomore, Pleasant Hill, Southeast Polk) received honorable mention.

Brondyke led league punters for the second straight year, averaging 40.6 yards a kick and landing 17 of his 57 punts inside the opponent’s 20-yard line.

VerMeer was Central’s leading receiver with 38 receptions for 570 yards and six touchdowns.

Wong was the Iowa Conference sacks leader with 10. He made 64 tackles, including 41 solo stops and 13 tackles for loss. He also had a pass breakup and recovered a fumble.

Remick and VerMeer joined S-back Nate Craft (senior, Princeton, Mo.) as Central’s team co-captains this season. They led the Dutch to a 6-4 campaign, Central’s 47th winning season since 1960.

Loras College running back Alex McGrew was the league’s most valuable player while Buena Vista University’s Jay Anderson was named coach of the year.
