Nov. 4, 2008Central heads to league tourney following win
STORM LAKE—Outside hitter Michelle Ripperger (junior, Urbandale) had 15 kills and the Central College volleyball team closed the regular season with a 25-20, 14-25, 25-9, 26-24 Iowa Conference victory at Buena Vista Tuesday night.
Right-side hitter Ashley Ellingson (sophomore, West Des Moines, Valley HS) had 10 kills and just one error as she hit .529 while Ripperger hit .440. Middle hitter Lindsay Jennings (junior, Atkins, Benton HS) had nine kills and hit .368. Central hit .333 overall.
Setter Megan Callahan (senior, Dubuque, Wahlert HS) had 31 assists for the Dutch (20-14 overall, 6-2 conference).
Conference tournament at Dubuque--Central will carry the No. 3 seed into this weekend’s league tournament at Loras College in Dubuque. Loras captured the league title, breaking Central’s 12-year string, by knocking off Simpson College at Indianola Tuesday night in five sets. Central will square off against No. 6 seed Cornell College Friday at 4:30 p.m. Central defeated the Rams (16-15 overall, 3-5 conference) at Mount Vernon 25-23, 26-28,2 5-20, 25-23.
The Central-Cornell winner will face second-seeded Simpson (19-13 overall, 7-1 conference) in a semifinal match Friday at 7:30 p.m. Friday’s semifinal winners meet in the tourney title match Saturday at 2 p.m. The tournament champion receives the league’s automatic berth in the NCAA Division III tournament.
