Oct. 30, 2008Dutch receive league honors
PELLA—Four Central College women’s tennis players and coach Bryan Mours have received Iowa Conference recognition.
Hilary Baehr (senior, Des Moines, Roosevelt HS), Stephanie Gibbons (sophomore, Ankeny), Faith Bliss (junior, Ottumwa) and Kayla Donner (freshman, Metamora, Ill., Metamora Township HS) were named to the all-Iowa Conference team.
Baehr earned the honor twice. She placed third in Flight A singles at the league individual tournament Oct. 17-18 in Cedar Rapids and teamed with Gibbons to place second in Flight A doubles. Baehr previously received all-conference recognition in singles in 2005 and 2006.
Bliss and Donner finished fourth in Flight A doubles.
Mours shared conference coach of the year honors with Coe head coach Eric Rodgers, in a vote of the league’s coaches. He piloted the Dutch to their second straight third-place finish at the conference team tournament Oct. 10-11 in Iowa City and a 10-8 dual mark with a 5-3 record against league opponents. Central advanced at least one entry into the semifinals of each of the five flights at the league’s individual tourney (Flights A, B and C singles; Flights A and B doubles).
In addition to the all-conference honorees, Central’s Katie Williamson (sophomore, Pella) and Emily Swartz (freshman, Eldora, South Hardin HS) took first place in Flight B doubles. Swartz finished second in Flight B singles and Brigitte Newman (sophomore, Albia) was fourth in Flight C singles.
